Reader Harris

Welcome to Reader Harris. Our house, created by amalgamating Thurstan and Ealhstan houses, is named after Dame Diana Reader Harris who was a former headmistress of the school. It is home to approximately 80 girls, which is around 20 girls in each year group.

We are the last house on campus on the ‘town-side’ of school, so are five minutes’ walk from Sherborne and we are immediately opposite the art and music blocks, which is hugely appreciated by all our art and music scholars and performers.

We have a lovely garden for croquet, table tennis or just relaxing - perfect for hosting barbecues and picnics for our parents, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, and grandparents (very much considered to be a part of the Reader Harris extended family) or just meeting up informally with friends from other houses.

We also have a wonderful drawing room which we use for everything from daily house meetings to pj film nights. In addition, we have a fun, brightly decorated common room which doubles as a study space during the day to a chill-out zone at night! The house is very well appointed for work and study times. We have a lovely library and each of the girls’ rooms has a work station. Our house dining room is a popular working space during prep times and the house office is a great place to access computers, colour printers and support from academic staff who cover almost all teaching departments!

Housemistress

Mrs Fiona Cracknell

Fee Cracknell is the very proud Housemistress of Reader Harris having taken up the role in September 2022 when she joined the Sherborne Girls community, alongside her husband Mark, who is Director of Music, and their nearly four-year-old daughter, Clemmie.

Prior to this, Fee was Assistant Housemistress and Assistant Director of Music specialising in vocal performance at Taunton School in Somerset.

In addition to running her vibrant boarding house, Fee is delighted to teach academic music and continues to coach singing and perform professionally whenever possible. In addition to music, Fee loves to attend live theatre, jog (albeit very badly!), paddleboard, is a keen amateur astronomer and frustrated interior designer!

Reader Harris is a vibrant, happy and hugely nurturing house where you will truly feel as though you have arrived home. The girls in this special place care deeply for one another and are always so very excited to welcome their new sisters into a community rooted in mutual respect, kindness and understanding. We truly believe in the power of a smile and as a house know we rise by lifting others.

The happiness and success of the girls in Reader Harris is of paramount importance to Fee, and all the amazing Reader staff, and it is such an enormous privilege to help our girls write their most amazing SG story – we can’t wait to meet you.

Other staff in Reader Harris

Ms Hannah Donnellan is the Assistant Housemistress and Mrs Anna Mike and Mrs Sara McLean are the Matrons. Mr Ben Watts and Mr Daniel Scott are Resident Tutors.

What makes Reader Harris special to the girls?

Reader Harris is a family. We look out for each other up at school, cheer each other on in matches, concerts, and competitions. At the end of the day, we love nothing more than to come home to our RH sisters, get in our pjs and enjoy a catch up over hot chocolate or snuggle up with a film in the Galley common room.
