Wingfield Digby

Wingfield Digby - named after the family who founded the school and used to live at Sherborne Castle - is in a convenient, central position on the campus, located near the main school, opposite the Merritt Centre and is the closest house to the School Shop, (which our girls love!).

Wingfield Digby boasts a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where girls can develop their potential to the full and do so in a 'home from home'. The house ethos of being part of a family, with the older girls nurturing and supporting the younger girls and everyone feeling valued for who they are, is key to the stable and warm environment in Wingfield.

With lots of beloved house traditions and with the girls taking a real pride in living here and representing the house, Wingfield Digby is proud of its successes, ambition, and clear sense of fun. The house itself offers lots of large, bright communal spaces: perfect for socials with plenty of space for the year groups to mix, or for girls to enjoy time on their own. Previously two houses (Alymar and Wingfield), it is a large building with lots of character, housing cubies for the younger years and a variety of comfortable dorms for our older girls.

Housemistress

Bethan Rayner

Bethan joined Sherborne Girls as Housemistress of Wingfield Digby in September 2025 having worked in boarding schools for the last 10 years.

Bethan writes:
"I am joining Sherborne Girls from Woldingham School where I was a Housemistress and Theology teacher. I am passionate about creating a home from home where pupils can thrive and are supported through their school journey. The first thing which is apparent when you enter Wingfield Digby is the passion and pride each pupil has to be a member of the house. It is a delight to work in a boarding house with such an established homely, vibrant, and encouraging atmosphere.

After studying Theology at Durham University I continued my study to Masters level alongside working as a Deputy Housemistress. I continue to be equally dedicated to my intertwined passions of boarding and TPE, I relish seeing pupils growing to enjoy their own study of and finding their own area of particular interest in TPE.

Outside of school I enjoy reading as much and as widely as possible; discovering the latest musicals to watch; baking or sewing as frequently as possible; and travelling around the world."

What makes Wingfield Digby special to the girls?

'I was a new girl this year. I was going into L5 and it was my first time boarding, so I was pretty nervous, however, I found it easy to settle in as all the house staff were so friendly and helpful. I don’t know anyone in my year who hasn’t settled in and who isn’t loving their time here.'

'What makes Wingfield Digby special is the friendly staff and the homely vibe! We also have so many unique traditions - too many to share! In each year group there is a definite feeling of happiness and lifelong friendships. This is my second year in WD, and right from the start, I felt that it was a home from home.'

'This is my fourth, and sadly, final year in Wingfield Digby. I have enjoyed it hugely and will miss it when I move on. There are numerous reasons why girls in Wingfield Digby love being here but perhaps the most important is our belief in each other and the sense of belonging that we have. We have won every House Spirit cup that has been awarded in the past two years and this reflects how the girls feel. We are proud to be Winglets!'
