Classics at Hanford Prep

"Latin is a dead language, As dead as it can be; It killed the ancient Romans, And now it's killing me..."

This is a famous quote that has been doing the rounds of Classics classrooms for many a year. However, nothing could be further from the truth at Hanford.

Girls here gain an understanding of how Romance languages work, but they also experience a crash course in ancient history and cosmology.

Learning Latin shines a light on the history and mythology of the ancient world. Latin is maths with goddesses, gladiators and flying horses, or flying children.

Cross curricular links with History, Philosophy and Religion, Geography and English ensure that the girls understand why it is worth learning Latin and how all learning is interconnected.

Latin is taught by Mrs Phillips, Head of Hanford, and girls start their Latin lessons in Year 6.
