Hanford Girls Boarding School | English Drama & Literacy

English & Literacy

We aim to foster a life-long love of language and literature in all its forms through reading, writing, speaking, performing and listening.

We do this by creating a happy, purposeful literary environment where each child is nurtured and encouraged to find the stories, books and authors she loves.

Hanford Prep girls are seldom far from a book. Perhaps that is why a recent Extreme Reading Challenge over half term was so popular.

We asked girls to send us photos of them reading in unusual locations, a challenge they all rose to brilliantly!

English & Literature

We foster a life-long love of language and literature in all its forms.

At the heart of our English teaching is reading. Wherever possible, the shared class text provides opportunities for a range of imaginative and practical writing, as well as the development of critical and analytical skills. Through discussion, the girls learn to explore and empathise with different viewpoints. They are supported in developing their ability to communicate with accuracy and flair, as is shown in their frequent success in writing competitions.

Beyond the classroom, the girls read widely for pleasure and have access to a wonderfully well stocked library from which they may borrow books at any time. Staff are always on hand to guide their choices. However, excitement about reading is often generated by the girls themselves.

Indeed, there is a ‘culture of reading’ at Hanford, supported by regular author visits, exciting World Book Day and National Poetry Day events, an annual Book Fair and participation in BookBuzz for our older girls.

Theatre trips

Every year, each pupil enjoys the experience of a visit to the theatre and for many an annual interactive performance provided by the Young Shakespeare Company.

By the time she leaves, a Hanford Prep girl should have a genuine enjoyment and appreciation of English, and have laid the foundations for her future success.
