Independent Prep School for Girls Dorset | Learning Support

Learning Support at Hanford Prep

At Hanford Prep, having a specific learning difference or a neurodiversity is never considered a barrier to learning.

We aim to offer timely, appropriate and specialist support whilst also ensuring that girls’ needs are met in the mainstream classroom.

Fundamental to our ethos is to prioritise self-esteem and celebrate girls’ strengths in all areas of school life. All staff are therefore keenly aware of the challenges and possibilities that their subject area may offer and work in close communication with the Head of Learning Support to accommodate girls’ specific needs.

Run by a full-time member of staff, the Learning Support department is high-profile and very much part of the mainstream curriculum.

Both individual and small-group lessons are offered by a Level 7 qualified teacher, specialising in both literacy and mathematics.

Support is tailored to need: from regular check-ins, a series of booster lessons or longer and consistent support.

The girls receive approximately two sessions a week, and we ensure that these lessons not only develop underlying skills, but also align closely with the requirements of mainstream lessons.

We strive to make lessons enjoyable through practical work, games, computer activities and multi-sensory methods, so that learning is active and memorable. Girls who receive support for their literacy will also follow a touch-typing course to support their spelling and writing fluency. As girls progress through the school many will be offered support with their study skills, memory and organisational techniques essential for independent learning.

Any girls who are placed on our Special Educational Needs Register will have an Individual Education Plan drawn up, which gives details of their needs, guidance for teaching staff, together with details of their learning targets.
