Art & Design at Sherborne Prep

Where creativity leads the way.

At Sherborne Prep, art doesn’t sit quietly in sketchbooks – it spills joyfully into every corner of school life. The Art Room buzzes with curiosity, colour and the glorious mess of making. Whether it’s a pencil sketch, a splashy collage or a clay hedgehog with attitude, the focus is always on expression, individuality and giving ideas space to grow.

Pupils are encouraged to take risks, embrace mistakes and feel proud of what they create – whatever shape it takes. Each week, one piece earns Artist of the Week and a prime spot in the Dining Hall (alongside the baked beans), with applause from staff, friends and our online community.

It’s not just about the art – it’s about building confidence, creativity and a mindset that lasts. Many go on to win scholarships to senior schools, but even more leave with something bigger: the belief that their ideas matter and their voice is worth sharing.

Design Dreams in the Making

Design & Technology at Sherborne Prep is hands-on, heads-together, and full of creative fizz.

We’re lucky to have a brilliant space that does both – a classroom for thinking, sketching and planning, and a workshop packed with tools, resources and proper making magic.

From Reception to Year 8, every pupil tackles a fresh project each term. Things kick off with a proper discussion – what shall we make, why does it matter, who’s it for? It’s all about relevance, purpose and bold ideas, brought to life through real-world thinking.

Cross-Curricular links pop up everywhere, turning wider knowledge into creative gold. Sustainability is front and centre too – our Year 8s recently designed and built a living wall using reclaimed pallets, proving that clever design can also be kind to the planet.

Curious? Come and see for yourself. The D&T room is a hive of excitement – saws buzzing, ideas bouncing, children making brilliant things happen. It’s where creativity doesn’t just happen – it takes shape.
