A School That Hums with Harmony
A place where melodies soar, rhythms bounce, and every voice finds its note.
Walk through the corridors of Sherborne Prep and you will often find yourself accompanied by the sound of music – quite literally. With over 110 individual lessons a week, the school hums, jingles, and occasionally bursts with instrumental energy. Whether it’s brass strings sighing or a spontaneous chorus breaking into song, our Music Department is a joyful hive of creativity.
From the Digby Brass Ensemble to string and woodwind groups, the Maestros to our many choirs, there is a place for every musician – beginner or virtuoso – to find their rhythm.
And with regular performance opportunities, from informal Friday recitals in our music hall or he Tindall to grand concerts in Gransden Hall and The Powell Theatre, our pupils learn to play and sing with confidence and pride.
Making Music Together (& Making Memories)
One of the most exciting collaborations in the calendar is our Joint Schools’ Orchestra project, where our pupils rehearse and perform alongside musicians from Sherborne Girls, Sherborne Boys and Hanford Prep.
It is a chance for young players to sit shoulder to shoulder with senior students – often Sherborne Prep alumni – and experience the magic of shared music-making.
These are the moments that stick: the triumphant final note, the knowing glance between sections, the quiet buzz of being part of something bigger.
Music at Sherborne Prep is about community as much as it is about composition.
Singing Our Hearts Out
Choral music is one of our proudest traditions.
We provide the majority of trebles for Sherborne Abbey’s renowned choirs – both boys’ and girls’ – and work closely with the Abbey’s Director of Music to ensure our choristers thrive in both their school life and their musical commitments.
Beyond the Abbey, we have choirs for every age and stage: auditioned senior choirs for those who want to stretch their vocal wings, a spirited Junior Choir for Years 3–4 and Year 5, and our ever-enthusiastic Pre-Prep Choir.
Whether it is chapel hymns, concert hall anthems, or just a joyful noise in rehearsal, our pupils learn that singing brings people – and hearts – together.
